ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE MUNICIPALITY OF GEROSKIPOU ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM

The Municipality of Geroskipou welcomes the recommendation of the Parliamentary Committee on the Interior for the creation of a municipality in eastern Paphos.

About two years ago, the Mayor, the members of the Municipal Council, the Municipal Service and the Geroskipou Residents’ Initiative Group launched a campaign to change the design of the mergers as far as the Paphos district is concerned. The Municipality expresses its satisfaction that the majority of the parliamentary parties have been convinced of the justice of our request and have recognised the importance of having a municipality in eastern Paphos that will respond more effectively to the needs of the area.

We call on the Ministry of the Interior to demonstrate in practice as well that the number of municipalities is not the very essence of local government reform and, in a spirit of consensus, to work together with the competent committee of the House of Representatives and the parliamentary parties to complete the effort.
