KONIA MUNICIPAL DISTRICT – historical and other information.
Konia is a historic and traditional village in the Paphos district, built on a hillside with a panoramic view reaching all the way to the town of Paphos, which lies just a few kilometres away. There are two possible versions of the village’s name: it either derives from the Franks who settled in the area during the period of Frankish rule and associated it with Cognac in France, or from the Ottomans who brought the name from the city of Iconium (Konya) in Asia Minor.
Konia is mentioned as early as the Middle Ages, as noted by Leontios Machairas in his chronicle. The village has a long educational history, having had a school since 1868. Its church is dedicated to Saint James, while the chapel of the Holy Five is also of particular interest.
Today, Konia combines its traditional character with modern development, as it is home to the Konia Industrial Zone, which contributes significantly to the local economy. The village is an ideal place for those seeking tranquillity and natural beauty, with locals and foreigners alike embracing it as a unique destination full of history and culture.
In 2024, with the local government reform, it was incorporated into the Municipality of Hierocepia.
