“Blue Flag” Awarded to Geroskipou Beaches

The Municipality of Geroskipou is pleased to announce that, for 2021, three of its beaches have been awarded the “Blue Flag”. These beaches are the Municipal Beach, the CTO Geroskipou Beach and the beach known as “Pachyammos 2”, located in front of the Ledra Hotel.

The “Blue Flag” programme is first and foremost an education and information campaign. The Blue Flag is a symbol of high quality and good organisation of the coastline. It is awarded each year to beaches that comply with a set of criteria including bathing water quality, environmental education and information, as well as beach safety and sound management.

Each local authority wishing to take part in the programme and be awarded for a specific stretch of coast must fully understand the required criteria and apply them in full.

The official ceremony for the award of the “Blue Flags” to beaches in Cyprus took place in Neo Chorio, Paphos last Thursday, 10 June 2021.

Cleaning and Upgrade Works at the Municipal Beach

With summer just around the corner, the Municipality of Geroskipou has already begun cleaning and upgrade works at the Municipal Beach, ahead of the arrival of both local and foreign visitors. The competent departments of the Local Authority are carrying out an extensive clean-up of the Geroskipou coast these days, methodically removing seaweed as well as the stones that accumulate during the winter period, so that the beach can be handed over clean and safe to bathers.

In addition, the Municipality’s departments have proceeded with the repair and maintenance of the sanitary facilities for the safety and comfort of those using the beach.

As part of the effort to upgrade the services at the Geroskipou beach and to provide practical support for the accessibility of people with mobility difficulties, facilities for people in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility continue to be provided. Beyond the installation of plastic walkways that allow a wheelchair user to reach the sea to swim, as well as the sanitary and parking facilities for use by people with disabilities, the Municipality has also purchased a new floating wheelchair, which is already available.

The goal of the Municipality of Geroskipou remains the physical upgrade and renewal of the area’s beaches, so that they become once again attractive and beautiful for the expected visitors of the summer season.
