INAUGURATION OF THE GEROSKIPOU LINK ROAD & SEAFRONT KIOSKS

The official handover of the vertical road connecting the historic centre of
Geroskipou with the seafront (Mariou Toka Avenue), as well as of the
seafront kiosks erected at the Geroskipou Municipal Beach, will
take place on Friday, 29 October 2021 at 10:00 a.m.

The inauguration will be performed by H.E. the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos
Anastasiades. The inauguration ceremony will be preceded by a blessing service conducted by the
Most Reverend Metropolitan of Pafos, Mr Georgios.

Ceremony Venue: Entrance of Mariou Toka Avenue (next to the Airport Avenue roundabout)

The Municipality of Geroskipou wishes to inform the public that the Refuse Collection Service will operate as normal tomorrow, 01 October 2021.

The offices and other departments of the Municipality will remain closed due to the public holiday.

Mediterranean Coast Day is celebrated every year on 25 September by the countries of the Mediterranean and the European Union.

To mark this year’s celebration, the “Akti” Centre for Studies and Research, with the support of the Municipality of Geroskipou, organised a clean-up of the coast and seabed at the Geroskipou Municipal Beach on 24 September, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr Costas Kadis.

Mediterranean Coast Day is an awareness campaign that aims to highlight the value of the coast, the environmental issues affecting it, and its interaction with human activities.

The Municipality of Geroskipou informs the public that, in cooperation with the university institutions Alexander College and CDA College, it continues to accept applications for the award of scholarships for the academic year 2021-22.

Scholarships are awarded only for the first year of study. Interested parties may contact the Municipality of Geroskipou (tel. 26960857), as well as the above academic institutions directly, for further information regarding the fields of study offered and other details.

Those interested in applying for the scholarships on offer must express their interest in writing to the Registry of the Municipality of Geroskipou, no later than Friday, 24 September 2021, at 1.30 p.m.

As part of the Municipality of Geroskipou’s “Ierokipia 2021” programme of events, and in collaboration with the “Pegasus” Fine Arts Foundation, the opening of the international painting exhibition “Figura Nova”, featuring works by Cypriot and international artists, took place last Wednesday, 15 September, at the “Apothiki” Municipal Art Gallery.

The opening was performed by AKEL Paphos Member of Parliament Mr Valentinos Fakontis.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until Sunday, 19 September (6.00 p.m. – 8.00 p.m.).

The “Ierokipia” events continue today, 17 September at 8.00 p.m. at “Kato Vrysi”, with the “Traditional-Style Art Music” event.

In view of the resumption of the debate on Local Government Reform in the House of Representatives, the Municipality of Geroskipou reaffirms its determination to create a Municipality of Eastern Paphos, led by the Municipality of Geroskipou.

It is the constitutional right of the House of Representatives to introduce changes to this particular bill. We recall that during the previous parliamentary term the majority of the Parliamentary Committee on the Interior had concluded in favour of establishing twenty municipalities (not seventeen, as was the Ministry of the Interior’s proposal). Among these municipalities was the Municipality of Eastern Paphos.

We expect that the competent Committee of the House will maintain this position and reaffirm its recommendation for the creation of the Municipality of Eastern Paphos. We recall that the Municipality of Geroskipou has proven, through two independent studies as well as through that of the Ministry of the Interior itself, that it is a viable municipality which, together with the neighbouring communities, can create a strong municipality in eastern Paphos for the benefit of the area’s residents. It goes without saying, of course, that there is no European requirement or condition regarding the number of municipalities.

Finally, we call on the Ministry of the Interior to reconsider its negative stance towards the Municipality of Geroskipou and to take seriously into account the will of the local community.
