MUNICIPALITY OF GEROSKIPOU
OBLIGATIONS OF DOG OWNERS
The Municipality of Geroskipou informs all its residents that, in accordance with the Dogs Law, all
dog owners are required to obtain a dog-keeping licence from the Municipality of
Geroskipou.
To issue a dog-keeping licence, the following must be submitted:
1. A health certificate or health record book for the dog, issued by a registered veterinarian.
2. Proof that the dog has been microchipped (microchip).
3. A registration certificate from the State Veterinary Services.
A dog owner is considered to be any person, at least sixteen years of age, who
holds a dog-keeping licence from the Municipality of Geroskipou and has the dog under their care. The
living conditions of the dog must not pose risks to public health,
the safety and welfare of people. In addition, the dog owner must have
a sign posted at the entrance of their premises with the warning “BEWARE OF DOG”, and
must ensure that their dog does not cause a nuisance or roam freely in
other areas.
OFFENCES AND PENALTIES
Under the Law, any person who-
(a) Keeps a dog without a keeping licence, or a dog that is not registered and microchipped,
(b) keeps a dog in breach of the provisions of this Law,
(c) takes any action with intent to deceive, or which is likely to deceive,
the Competent Authority or the Director in the registration or control of dogs under this
Law,
(d) abandons their dog or fails to take appropriate measures to prevent its escape or
getting loose,
(e) allows or tolerates that the dog of which they are the owner, or which they have under their
care-
(i) causes a disturbance through loud and continuous barking that constitutes a nuisance to the public,
(ii) soils or contaminates any place with excrement without collecting it,
(iii) roams freely on a public road or in any public place without being
leashed, or in a place belonging to another person without their consent,
(f) in any way violates the provisions of this Law,
is guilty of an offence and, upon conviction, is liable to a term of imprisonment or a
fine, or both such penalties.
It is emphasised that the Municipality of Geroskipou will proceed with legal action against all
dog owners who have not obtained the required dog-keeping licence.
