Announcement by the Municipality of Eastern Paphos regarding reports from bathers

Following reports from bathers about the presence of white/brown patches resembling foam on the surface of the sea at Geroskipou Municipal Beach, the Municipality of Eastern Paphos carried out an initial investigation and a series of actions to safeguard public health.

The Municipality informs the public that:

1) The results of the seawater analyses at Geroskipou’s bathing beaches, carried out by the Municipality, are very good.

2) We have been informed by the Ports Authority that, as of 1 August 2024, all vessels deliver their sewage to shore, as has been the case in recent years, but it is now ensured that these deliveries take place in the presence of the Ports Authority or the Port Police.

3) According to a specialist scientist contacted by the Municipality, the amorphous masses of mucus, brown/white in colour, that float on the surface and then sink are the result of natural processes taking place in surface waters and are associated with the photosynthetic activity of single-celled organisms (phytoplankton) found in the marine environment.
