Response to the Geroskipou Residents’ Initiative Group and AKEL Geroskipou

With regard to the complaints and the posts on the internet and in the local media aimed at discrediting the Municipality of Geroskipou and promoting specific individuals, we would like to present to you the true facts concerning the landscaping of a green area by a private company.
The background to this matter is that a businessman, in a letter presented before the Municipal Council on 6/12/2022, expressed his wish to re-landscape a green area located behind his business. The area had originally been landscaped by the owner, when he obtained the required permits in 2000, but over time, and mainly because it is in a remote location, it was destroyed by vandalism. The businessman stated that the design would be carried out by experts and that he would cover all the costs, requesting to use the area for two months, July and August.
The Municipal Council, taking into account the very poor condition of the area in question, given that it lies within the agricultural zone at a dead end with no footfall where some people would often dump rubbish and debris, unanimously decided to approve the request, provided that plans would be prepared and submitted to the technical department for approval. The Municipal Council’s decision was communicated to the businessman on the condition that the approval in no way concerns the privatisation and/or appropriation of the area.
At the same time, it should be noted that this particular area is under grant, since the title deed has not been updated, and the Municipal Council, in its decision dated 6/12/2022, had recorded that the title deed would need to be updated.
Recently, the businessman has completed the landscaping of the area. The Municipal Engineer, following an on-site inspection, found that there are significant deviations from the approved plans and the principles that had been set, and in a letter called on the businessman to comply with his instructions, otherwise the prescribed measures will be taken against him.
This is the real truth, and some people should stop attacking the Municipality of Geroskipou, which they lose no opportunity to disparage. Criticism is legitimate, but misinformation is not. It is also a matter of wonder that some avoided requesting the official briefing on the reasoning behind the decision and on the actions the Municipality has taken on the matter, choosing instead the path of sterile criticism.
At the same time, it saddens us that, despite the fact that at the initiative of the Acting Mayor meetings were held at the Municipal Hall with all the political parties and stakeholders of Geroskipou, and it was stressed to them that both the Acting Mayor and the Municipality’s departments are at their disposal to discuss any proposals or questions they have with the aim of improving the Municipality, some, for their own reasons, follow their own tactics.
We reiterate that we are at anyone’s disposal for a meeting, in order to answer any questions they may have and to brief them on any matter that requires further information.
The Municipality of Geroskipou operates within the framework of legality and its concern is the public interest.
In conclusion, we declare that Geroskipou is above everyone, and we will not allow it to be exploited by anyone.
