Municipality of Geroskipou Announcement on Local Government Reform
In view of the proposed reform of Local Government, the Municipal Council of Geroskipou, at its session of 27 November 2018, decided to take all necessary steps and make all necessary representations to preserve the administrative entity of the Municipality of Geroskipou.
Unfortunately, instead of the discussion on this matter focusing on strengthening the administrative and financial autonomy of municipalities, and instead of the emphasis being placed on how Local Government can respond more effectively to citizens’ needs and address its shortcomings and problems, the discussion is wrongly focused on a predetermined reduction in the number of municipalities, and moreover in an arbitrary and undemocratic manner, since the views of the elected councils and local communities are not taken into account. We state clearly and to all quarters that we will never accept the will of the government or of parliament being exercised independently of the wishes of the citizens, particularly since the establishment of municipalities came about through local referendums. The result of the proposed reform will be the “punishment” of a large number of viable and well-managed municipalities and the rescue of the larger ones. We regret to observe that this is not reform.
The Municipality of Geroskipou has existed as an autonomous community since ancient times. It is one of the most healthy and financially viable municipalities (ranked 10th in revenue out of a total of 30 municipalities), with progressive initiatives and enormous prospects for growth (both economic and demographic). It deserves and will have a place on the map of Local Government.
The Municipality of Geroskipou has a position on the reform of Local Government and has formally submitted it to the President of the Republic, the Minister of the Interior, the parliamentary parties, and the Union of Cyprus Municipalities.
We call on the residents of Geroskipou to join forces in this effort, which is a matter that concerns us all.
