A local-government delegation from the Geroskipou municipal district of the Municipality of Eastern Paphos paid an official visit to Agia Paraskevi in Attica, as part of the twinning arrangement with the Municipality of Agia Paraskevi.

The members of the Cypriot delegation, specifically the Deputy Mayor of Geroskipou Andreas Siikkis and municipal councillors Georgoula Christofi and Marios Hadjimitsis, held a working meeting with the Mayor of Agia Paraskevi Yiannis Mylonakis, with whom they discussed opportunities for broadening cooperation between the two Municipalities in areas such as culture, education and others. Mr Mylonakis thanked them for the visit and, after briefing them on important current initiatives of the Municipality, stressed that his aim is to set in motion joint efforts that will benefit the citizens of both Municipalities.

Also taking part in the meeting were the Deputy Mayors for Citizen Service Chrysoula Xyngi, for Sport Petros Diakogiannis, for Education Kostas Gourgoulis, for Culture Panos Xenakis, and for Cleanliness and the Environment Yiannis Logothetis.

At the Mayor’s invitation, the Cypriot delegation then attended the Municipality’s festive events in honour of its patron saint, Agia Paraskevi, as well as the music concert that followed in Melina Mercouri Square.

At the same time, as part of their visit, they attended a memorial service in honour of the national martyr Evagoras Pallikaridis. At the ceremony, the Mayor and the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Stavros Avgoustidis, laid wreaths, honouring the memory of the Cypriot fighter.

The visit concluded with a very moving event in the garden of the A. Kontopoulos library last Friday evening, on the theme of the sombre 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

Speeches were delivered by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Stavros Avgoustidis, the Deputy Mayor of Geroskipou Andreas Siikkis, and the Deputy Mayor for Citizen Service and Social Dialogue Chrysoula Xyngi, representing Mayor Yiannis Mylonakis, and Mrs Spyridoula Dimitrakopoulou, philologist and member of the Lyceum of Greek Women. Also present were

Mrs Xyngi, after warmly welcoming the members of the Cypriot delegation, noted among other things: “Our peoples are bound by centuries-old, deep ties of friendship and solidarity. The twinning is a unique opportunity and gives us the ability, through activities and events, to exchange views and ideas, to express our concerns and reflections, and to promote the idea of cooperation across a broad range of fields, as well as unity among citizens.”

The event closed with a dance performance by the Lyceum of Greek Women, Agia Paraskevi Regional Dance Section.
