HEALTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT
- Ensures the cleaning of streets, parks, beaches and, in general, all public and private spaces (refuse and generally discarded items).
- Takes care of cleanliness, hygiene and the improvement of the environment.
- Carries out inspections of food and drink, including drinking water: under this responsibility, scheduled and unscheduled inspections are conducted to verify sanitary conditions and compliance with hygiene rules for food safety at all premises where food and drink for human consumption are prepared, cooked and/or sold.
- Investigates and resolves any nuisances (problems that may affect the health, safety and comfort of residents).
- Controls harmful insects and rodents (spraying crew for mosquitoes, cockroaches, fleas, mice, etc.).
- Prohibits the keeping of animals and birds without a pet-keeping permit (nuisance, problems from waste, etc.).
- Ensures the proper operation and general cleanliness of the municipal public toilets.
- Enforces the relevant legislation and takes measures, including the imposition of out-of-court fines against those who pollute public spaces:
- Inspecting private spaces (plots, yards, houses and other premises) to establish whether they are kept clean.
- Inspecting the drainage systems of premises to establish whether they are maintained and operate satisfactorily, and whether there is any overflow or seepage of sewage anywhere.
- Enforcing the relevant legislation and taking measures against those who do not comply, so that Public Health is protected and decency and comfort in the town are safeguarded.
- Collecting refuse and transporting it to the landfill site.
- Organising cleanliness campaigns in cooperation with organised groups and the town’s residents.
- Issuing dog-keeping licences and maintaining a relevant register.
- Checking that the conditions in which dogs are kept are appropriate and that they are kept clean.
- Rounding up stray dogs.
