Opening Lecture of the 17th Cycle of the “Ierokipeion Open University in Paphos”

The “Ierokipeion Open University in Paphos”, jointly organised by the Municipality of Geroskipou, the University of Cyprus and Radio Pafos, opened its doors for its 17th cycle of lectures on 30 October 2020.

For the 17th consecutive year, the institution continues its effort to keep the Paphos public intellectually engaged through the delivery of accessible lectures by members of the Teaching and Research staff of the University of Cyprus. The lectures are also enriched by the participation of teaching and research staff from other Universities, as well as by specialists from scientific institutes and organisations.

The 17th cycle of lectures of the “Ierokipeion Open University in Paphos” comprises six lectures and will run until 28 May 2021. A dynamic and engaging cycle of lectures invites Paphos residents of all ages to a fruitful dialogue on the pressing issues facing our society today.

The opening lecture was delivered by Ms Maria Iacovou, Professor of Archaeology at the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus, who developed the topic “An unknown acropolis and a mysterious tumulus: University of Cyprus excavations at Palaepaphos (2006 – 2020)”.

The lecture was dedicated to the memory of our fellow townswoman and University of Cyprus graduate, Konstantina Miltiadous, who passed away unjustly some two years ago after a hard-fought battle with a serious illness.

The lectures of the “Ierokipeion Open University” are open to the public and are broadcast live across Cyprus by Radio Pafos and recorded by the University of Cyprus radio station UCYvoice 95.2. At the end of each presentation, the public may take an active part in the discussion that follows.

The programme’s communication sponsor is the newspaper “Politis”.
