Response to publications and announcements that do not correspond to reality
We would like to address the recent publications concerning the use of the former Geroskipou Vocational Training Centre (KEN) and to inform both the residents of Geroskipou and the residents of the new Municipality of Eastern Paphos that the content of these publications does not correspond to reality. The publications are untrue and misleading.
With the aim of maturing ideas rather than taking a final decision on options for the redevelopment, upgrading and reuse of the site, the Geroskipou Municipal Council has undertaken a series of actions to ensure the project is not put on hold, as follows:
– Meetings with public and private university institutions
– Public consultation with the participation of residents on the use of the site
– Cooperation with a private Civil Engineer aimed at restoring the structural adequacy of the existing buildings
– Exchange of views with the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber
– Meeting with the relevant government officials and Ministry executives
– Cooperation with an internationally renowned architectural firm and preparation of a Master Plan
– Graphic depiction of alternative development scenarios
– Submission of proposals through the Municipality’s strategy with the aim of pursuing European funding.
The proposals are of such a nature that they do not preclude future interventions and use of the site, nor do they preclude alternative uses, which will be based on fundamental principles.
In brief, these principles are as follows:
– Preservation and restoration of the character of a historically and architecturally significant industrial complex, comprising both the existing buildings and the open space.
– Upgrading and reuse of the complex in a productive and sustainable manner.
– Interaction between the educational, social and cultural sectors, with the main focus on returning it to the community and beyond.
– Its direct connection with neighbouring functions and spaces, such as the Sculpture Park and the Central Square of Geroskipou, with the aim of creating a unified space for social interaction and recreation, with multiple spatial gradations and activities.
– Preservation of intangible heritage.
– Support for new, innovative educational initiatives.
– A humanistic / ecological approach.
The publications contain inaccurate information, which provokes public sentiment and creates false impressions in public opinion.
Based on these publications, AKEL Geroskipou has issued an announcement that is, to say the least, unfortunate and unjustly turns public sentiment against the Geroskipou Municipal Council.
In conclusion, we encourage anyone wishing to obtain correct and reliable information on the matter to contact the Municipality of Geroskipou and not to be swayed by rumours and unfounded information.
